We Moved From California to Texas; We Make Less but Love the Lifestyle

A New Beginning in Texas: The Journey of Gerardo and Tomi Ruiz

Introduction

Gerardo and Tomi Ruiz, a young couple from San Bernardino, California, embarked on a life-changing journey to Texas, driven by a tragic event that altered their lives. Their story is one of resilience and hope, as they seek a fresh start in a new state, balancing the joys of affordability with the longing for familiarity.

Their Life in California

In California, the Ruizes faced escalating challenges, including rising homelessness, gang activity, and a prohibitive cost of living. Despite these issues, California held dear memories, with Tomi’s family nearby and the convenience of diverse landscapes. However, the couple contemplated relocating to states like Texas, Arizona, or Utah, though their plans remained tentative until fate intervened.

The Triggering Event

The Line Fire in September 2024 was the catalyst for their move. The fire, starting near Tomi’s grandparents’ home, spread to their neighborhood, destroying half their house. The terrifying ordeal left them with nothing but the need to restart. The inability to secure a new lease in California hastened their decision to leave, viewing Texas as an opportunity for a new beginning.

Moving to Texas: A Leap of Faith

Texas welcomed the Ruizes with open arms, offering affordable living and a family-friendly environment. Gerardo’s brother in San Antonio had acquainted them with the city’s charm during a prior visit. With determination, they packed their remaining belongings and made the move, viewing Texas as a place to rebuild their lives.

Adjustments and Challenges in Texas

The transition to Texas brought both relief and challenges. The cost of living was significantly lower, with rent nearly half of what they paid in California. However, job opportunities in Texas offered lower wages, affecting their income. Gerardo, a tow truck driver, found it tough to match his California earnings, while Tomi, a phlebotomist, accepted a lower-paying job. Despite these financial adjustments, the Ruizes found solace in Texas’s greenery, parks, and welcoming community.

Final Thoughts: Embracing the Future

Though they miss California’s cuisine and familiar landscapes, the Ruizes are determined to make Texas their home. The absence of wildfire threats and the friendly Texan spirit have eased their transition. Looking ahead, they plan to settle in Amarillo, drawn by its colder climate, symbolizing their commitment to a new life filled with hope and promise.
