SBU Detains High-Ranking Counter-Terrorism Official for Espionage

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has made a significant arrest, detaining the head of its counter-terrorism department, who is suspected of working for Russian intelligence. This announcement was made by SBU head Vasyl Maliuk on February 12. While the agency did not publicly disclose the suspect’s name, reliable sources from the Kyiv Independent identified him as Colonel Dmytro Koziura. The arrest has sent ripples through Ukraine’s security apparatus, highlighting the ongoing threat of Russian infiltration and sabotage.

Extensive Illicit Activities Documented

According to SBU chief Maliuk, the suspect’s illicit activities were documented in 14 separate cases. The operation to uncover and detain the individual required a meticulous and multifaceted approach, employing both overt and covert methods. Maliuk emphasized the complexity of the operation, stating, "In the process, we managed to document the collection and transmission of relevant information to Russia." The suspect was allegedly working closely with Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), a significant breach that underscores the scale of Russian efforts to undermine Ukraine’s security.

Penetrating the Traitor’s Gadgets

The SBU’s counter-intelligence team utilized advanced techniques to gather evidence against the suspect. "Using encrypted software bookmarks, we penetrated the traitor’s gadgets — mobile terminals and computers. We basically lived with him and conducted audio and video monitoring," Maliuk added. This level of surveillance and infiltration required significant resources and expertise, reflecting the SBU’s commitment to rooting out internal threats. The operation is part of an ongoing internal purge to ensure the integrity of Ukraine’s security services.

Ongoing Internal Purge and Future Plans

The SBU head described the operation as a crucial step in the ongoing internal purge, aimed at identifying and neutralizing any Russian infiltration attempts. Maliuk warned that no such attempts would succeed, underscoring the agency’s resolve. "We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of security and trust within our ranks," he stated. Further details of the case are expected to be released soon, providing more insight into the extent of the breach and the methods used to uncover it.

Zelensky Highlights Military Disparity

President Volodymyr Zelensky has also addressed the broader implications of this incident and the ongoing conflict with Russia. He highlighted the disparity in forces, noting that Ukraine’s army consists of 110 brigades, while Russia fields 220 and plans to expand to 250 this year. In contrast, Europe, including U.S. troops stationed there, has only about 82 combat brigades. Zelensky emphasized that without Ukraine’s army, Europe would face a "total" Russian occupation, underscoring the critical role Ukraine plays in regional security.

The Importance of Ukraine’s Resistance

Zelensky’s remarks underscore the strategic importance of Ukraine’s resistance to Russian aggression. The country’s military is not only fighting for its own sovereignty but also for the broader security of Europe. The SBU’s successful operation to detain the high-ranking official is a testament to Ukraine’s resilience and determination to thwart external threats. As the conflict continues, the international community’s support for Ukraine remains crucial in maintaining the balance of power and ensuring the security and stability of the region.
