Scrim: The Elusive White Terrier
Scrim, a runaway white Terrier, has captivated the hearts of many in New Orleans with his remarkable escapes and resilience. After pulling off two daring getaways last year, Scrim has been rescued for a third time, this time by a member of the nonprofit animal group Trap Dat Cat. Zeus’ Rescues, another animal group involved in his story, announced the good news on Tuesday morning. Scrim’s latest escape began in November when he leapt 13 feet out of a second-story window while being cared for in Michelle Cheramie’s home. Since then, he has been on an incredible journey through various parts of the city, facing numerous challenges along the way.
An Ordeal of Survival
"He has had quite an ordeal since leaping from a second-story window in November," Cheramie wrote in an Instagram post on Wednesday. Scrim’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. After his initial escape, he spent a month maneuvering from Uptown to Mid-City, a feat that showcases his determination and resourcefulness. On Christmas Day, he found himself lost in Old Metairie, only to reappear in Harrahan and then find his way back to Mid-City. Despite the odds, Scrim managed to survive thunderstorms and New Year’s fireworks, which can be particularly terrifying for dogs. His resilience continued into the Mardi Gras season and even through the Super Bowl, further cementing his status as a unique and beloved figure in the community.
A Health Check and a New Home
Following his latest rescue, Scrim underwent a thorough veterinary exam, including X-rays, to assess his condition. Apart from tapeworms and intestinal parasites, he was found to be in "good health," a testament to his indomitable spirit. Once fully recovered, Scrim is set to find a new home with plenty of outdoor space and other dog friends to help him socialize. This new environment is expected to provide the stability and companionship he needs to thrive and overcome his past traumas.
A History of Escapes and Community Support
Scrim’s story began in early 2024 when Cheramie first saved him. However, he broke free in April and managed to stay on the run while still being spotted on local security cameras around the city. He was eventually found in October and received medical treatment for his injuries, which included two embedded projectiles, likely from a pellet gun, abrasions, and a missing piece of his ear. These injuries highlighted the dangers he faced during his time on the run and the urgent need for his safe return.
Going Viral and Community Efforts
Scrim’s back-to-back escapes quickly made him a viral sensation in New Orleans. Dozens of people called in to report sightings, and a map was even created to track his movements in an effort to catch him. Zeus’ Rescues, in collaboration with community volunteers and Trap Dat Cat, set up food stations and trail cameras to monitor his movements following his November escape. The runaway dog also managed to survive a historic 10 inches of snow in New Orleans in January, further adding to his legend.
A Special Dog in the Eyes of Many
"He has survived hurricanes, blizzards, fireworks, street cars, cars, being chased… He’s some special dog," Cheramie told WWL. Scrim’s remarkable journey has not only captured the attention of the local community but has also highlighted the importance of animal welfare and the power of community support. His story is a testament to the resilience of animals and the compassion of those who work tirelessly to help them. With a new home and a fresh start, Scrim is set to begin the next chapter of his life, one filled with love, care, and the opportunity to thrive.
