Leaving Miami, Embracing Small-Town Florida: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Contentment
Moving from Miami to a small Florida town on the Space Coast was never part of the long-term plan. It was supposed to be a temporary stop, a way to save money and prepare for an eventual move to Portland, Oregon, a city I had idealized for its vibrant culture and access to nature. But life has a way of surprising us, and here I am, 15 years later, happily rooted in this quiet town with no plans to leave. The decision to leave Miami was not made lightly, but it turned out to be one of the best choices I ever made. High living costs, a fast-paced lifestyle, and the constant pressure to keep up with the city’s demands left me feeling burned out and uncertain about my future. In contrast, the slower-paced, nature-filled life of my new town offered me the peace and stability I craved.
Miami: A City of Fun, but at a Price
Miami in my 20s was everything I thought it would be—vibrant, exciting, and full of life. The city had an energy that was hard to resist, from its stunning beaches to its endless options for dining, nightlife, and cultural experiences. I often heard people describe Miami as a city where the party never stops, and I couldn’t help but agree. But as time went on, the gloss began to wear off. The high cost of living made it difficult to save money, and the constant need to be "on the go" started to feel more like a burden than a thrill. Whether it was paying for parking, club entrance fees, or expensive dinners, life in Miami always seemed to come with a price tag. While I cherished the memories I made there, I began to realize that the city’s fast-paced lifestyle wasn’t sustainable for me in the long run.
Finding Peace in a Slower-Paced Life
The transition to small-town Florida was not without its challenges, but it quickly became clear that this was where I belonged. The town’s laid-back vibe was a welcome change from Miami’s non-stop action, and I found myself embracing the simpler things in life. Gone were the late-night dinners at trendy restaurants or the constant pressure to attend the next big event. Instead, I discovered the joy of quiet evenings at home, spending time outdoors, and connecting with nature in ways I never had before. The town’s slower pace of life taught me the value of rest and allowed me to recharge in a way that Miami never could. Over time, I realized that I didn’t need the hustle and bustle of the city to be happy—I just needed a place where I could live life on my own terms.
A Deeper Connection with Nature
One of the most unexpected surprises of living on the Space Coast was how much it deepened my connection with the outdoors. While I had access to beautiful beaches in Miami, visiting them often felt like a hassle, whether it was dealing with crowds or the long drive. In my new town, the beaches were cleaner, less crowded, and easily accessible, making it easier to enjoy them regularly. Hiking became a newfound passion, thanks to the stunning state parks and forests in Central Florida. Even in my own neighborhood, I encountered more wildlife than I ever did in Miami—tortoises, rabbits, and deer became familiar sights. Portland, with its lush greenery, had once been my ideal destination, but I discovered that Florida had its own unique natural beauty to offer.
Raising My Son in a Small-Town Environment
Becoming a mother brought a new perspective to my life in this small town. I wanted my son to grow up in an environment where he could spend time outdoors, explore nature, and experience a slower, more peaceful way of life. In Miami, the focus would have been on the latest restaurants or events, but in my new town, "going out" meant trips to the beach or hiking trails. This way of life not only benefited my son but also allowed me to model a lifestyle that prioritizes rest, connection with nature, and community. Additionally, as a teacher, I found that my salary went much further in this small town than it would have in Miami. I was able to afford a home, go on vacations, and enjoy a sense of financial stability that I might not have achieved otherwise.
Reflecting on 15 Years in Small-Town Florida
Fifteen years have passed since I made the decision to leave Miami, and while I still miss the energy and cultural richness of the city, I am deeply grateful for the life I’ve built here. This town has taught me the value of slowing down, appreciating nature, and finding joy in simplicity. I’ve grown into a more outdoorsy person, connecting with the environment in ways I never imagined. For my son, I’ve been able to create a childhood filled with outdoor adventures and a sense of community that I believe will serve him well. While Portland was once a dream destination, I’ve come to realize that Florida has its own hidden gems, and I feel no need to look elsewhere. What started as a temporary stop turned into a permanent home, and I couldn’t be happier with the way things turned out.
