Koma’s initial post on Instagram was met with a wave of comments, many of which suggested he should donate the proceeds from his T-shirt sales to a charity supporting Holocaust survivors. Recognizing the significance of this suggestion, Koma swiftly embraced the idea. "Thank you for the charity suggestions 🧡," he replied, adding that all proceeds would go to the Blue Card, an organization dedicated to helping Holocaust survivors. Koma also updated the main caption of his post to explicitly mention the Blue Card, further emphasizing his commitment to a positive and meaningful response.
The Commercial Fiasco
The controversy surrounding Ye’s T-shirts extended beyond just the design. According to TMZ, the rapper bought a Super Bowl ad to promote the now-shuttered storefront, which, despite the massive expenditure, only managed to sell 10,000 units, earning him $2 million. This figure pales in comparison to the reported $8 million he spent on the 30-second commercial. The online listing for the T-shirt was labeled "HH-01," a clear and disturbing reference to the Nazi salute. Shopify’s decision to shut down the site was based on the violation of its terms of service, which prohibit hate speech and the promotion of harmful content.
Shopify’s Stance
In a statement released on Tuesday, Shopify emphasized that all merchants are responsible for adhering to the platform’s rules. "This merchant did not engage in authentic commerce practices and violated our terms, so we removed them from Shopify," the company said. Shopify President Harley Finkelstein further explained that the owners of Yeezy.com had an entire day to prove they were not violating the company’s policies, but they failed to do so. "The moment we realized this was not actually a real commerce practice, they weren’t actually engaging in authentic commerce, we pulled it down," Finkelstein told CNBC’s Sara Eisen. He also expressed his personal distress over the matter, stating, "I’m a proud Jewish entrepreneur. I’m a proud Jewish community member. You and I have talked about this in the past, that it’s a big part of my identity. So obviously I’m devastated by that."
Ye’s Troubling Behavior
Ye’s recent behavior has been marked by a series of antisemitic comments and actions. He has referred to himself as a Nazi and declared his love for Adolf Hitler in posts on X, the social media platform. "Hitler was sooooo fresh," he wrote in one post, and in another, he said, "I’m a Nazi. I love Hitler." Additionally, his music booking agent, Daniel McCartney of 33 & West, has dropped him following his antisemitic comments.
