Understanding the growing role of Ukraine in the development of unmanned systems
The Unmanned Systems’ Forces, created three years post-Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, marks a significant step in Ukraine’s strategic defensive capabilities. To meet the evolving needs of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Kyiv has significantly ramped up domestic production and increased exports of drones and related military equipment. The state’s Ministry for Mechanical and Industrial Development, the Strategic Industries Ministry, has emphasized the importance of rapid production and quality control in this dynamic environment. The firm has established not only a R&D center but also a dedicated-production facility with its own maintenance and development team, serving as an example of localized manufacturing that has launched manufacturing in Ukraine.
Quantum Systems has provided Ukraine with drones since Russia’s invasion, establishing a role in supply chain management. The company has also set up a support and logistics center, ensuring comprehensive coverage of unmanned systems. By the end of 2024, it promises to deliver 500 reconnaissance drones, fulfilling a criticalrole in Ukraine’s security capabilities. The mechanism for this successful deployment involved strengthen manufacturing capabilities in Ukraine, whose Ballet company-driven approach has already yielded significant successes since the initial ramping up of production in the conflict. This initiative has not only helped Ukraine in the immediate post-conflict period but has also set a precedent for rapid industrialization and expertise development in the country.

The Unmanned Systems’ Forces, or KSIV, is organizing special drone units and tailoring production processes to suit Russian requirements, showcasing Ukraine’s commitment to standing out in this rapidly evolving market. Ukraine’s industrial development strategy has embraced cross-border collaboration and investment in production, which has been pivotal in its transition from a small elsewise to a legitimate player in unmanned systems development. This surge in manufacturing has not only boosted the country’s military capabilities but has also strengthened its role as a forward thinker in a global context.
