Francisco Alvarez believes Mets have ‘best lineup in baseball’ as he eyes bounce-back season

High Expectations for the Mets Lineup

Francisco Alvarez has made it clear that he has sky-high expectations for the Mets lineup this season. Speaking on the report date for pitchers and catchers in Port St. Lucie, Alvarez confidently declared, “I think we are the best lineup in baseball.” His optimism stems from the impressive roster the Mets have assembled, featuring big names like Juan Soto and Pete Alonso, who recently signed a two-year deal to return to the team. Alvarez also highlighted the contributions of returning players such as Francisco Lindor and Mark Vientos, who had standout offensive performances last season. With a mix of power hitters, contact hitters, and overall versatility, Alvarez believes the Mets have all the tools necessary to compete with any team in the league.

Alvarez’s Determination to Bounce Back

Alvarez’s confidence in the lineup is paired with a personal determination to improve his own performance. Last season, he struggled offensively, posting a .237/.307/.403 slash line with 11 home runs and 47 RBIs in 100 games—a far cry from his expectations. Recognizing the need to elevate his game, Alvarez took proactive steps during the offseason. He hired a swing coach at the recommendation of former teammate J.D. Martinez, a move aimed at addressing his hitting struggles.

Reflecting on the challenges he faced last season, Alvarez admitted, “Last year was my worst year and it was a little bit tough.” He acknowledged moments where he felt mentally drained but emphasized his ability to bounce back. “I lost my mind for a little bit,” he said, “but I think that’s normal. Everybody has to move past those moments. If I have bad moments here, I don’t think it’s going to affect me.” Alvarez is determined to put last season behind him and prove himself as a key contributor to the Mets lineup.

Overcoming Injuries and Finding Strength

Alvarez also addressed the physical challenges he faced last season, including a torn left thumb ligament that required surgery in April and kept him sidelined for seven weeks. While he downplayed the impact of the injury on his offensive struggles, he expressed optimism about his improved health heading into the new season. “I feel way stronger right now,” he said. “My thumb is way better, so I think this year I have no excuses for nothing.”

This renewed sense of physical and mental strength has Alvarez eager to showcase his full potential. After a season marked by setbacks, he is ready to step up and be part of the conversation as one of the Mets’ most promising young players. With his health restored and his swing refined, Alvarez is poised to make a significant impact in 2024.

Ryne Stanek’s Return Bolsters the Bullpen

While the Mets’ lineup has garnered much attention, the team’s bullpen has also been reinforced with the return of veteran reliever Ryne Stanek. Stanek, who joined the Mets at last year’s trade deadline, played a crucial role in the team’s postseason push, delivering a 3.38 ERA in seven appearances. Despite being a free agent over the winter, Stanek remained optimistic about returning to the Mets, and his optimism paid off when he agreed to a one-year, $4.5 million contract in late January.

Beyond his on-field contributions, Stanek highlighted the personal reasons that made re-signing with the Mets an attractive option. “The team is good, but [the Mets] were really welcoming for me and my family,” he said. He emphasized the importance of quality of life factors, such as the team’s support for players with families, as a key factor in his decision. “They took great care of my family, and that meant a lot to me,” he added. Stanek’s return not only strengthens the bullpen but also reflects the Mets’ commitment to creating a positive environment for their players.

A New Era of Leadership Under Carlos Mendoza

As the Mets prepare for the 2024 season, all eyes will be on manager Carlos Mendoza, who is set to lead his first spring training with the team. Mendoza is scheduled to hold his first session with reporters on Tuesday, followed by the official start of workouts for pitchers and catchers on Wednesday. This marks the beginning of a new era for the Mets, with Mendoza at the helm and a talented roster ready to take the field.

The combination of a stacked lineup, a rejuvenated bullpen, and strong leadership has created an atmosphere of excitement and expectation around the Mets. With players like Alvarez, Soto, Alonso, and Stanek ready to make waves, the team is determined to prove that they are indeed one of the best in baseball. As spring training gets underway, the Mets are looking to build on their momentum and put together a season that lived up to Alvarez’s bold declaration.
