Burglaries Target Asian-American Households in Washington County
In late September, the Tigard Police Department (TPD) began receiving reports of a series of home burglaries targeting what appeared to be affluent Asian-American households. Over the following months, the number of incidents grew to a total of 39 cases, spread across three jurisdictions: Tigard, Washington County, and Beaverton. The consistent pattern and method of these break-ins suggested a well-organized group of suspects, making the investigation particularly challenging but also crucial for community safety.
A Coordinated Investigation Leads to Breakthrough
The TPD, along with other local and federal agencies, launched a comprehensive investigation to uncover the identities of the burglars. In November, a warning was issued to residents across these three jurisdictions, alerting them to the ongoing threat and providing safety tips. The police departments worked tirelessly, combing through surveillance footage, witness statements, and other leads to piece together the puzzle.
Execution of Search Warrants
On February 2, a significant breakthrough was achieved as search warrants were executed in three different cities: Oregon City, Bend, and Portland. In Oregon City, the TPD, Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team, and several other agencies served a warrant at an apartment complex on South Beavercreek Road. Meanwhile, in Bend, the Bend Police Department and the Central Oregon Emergency Response Team executed a warrant at an apartment complex on Gross Drive. These coordinated efforts were crucial in gathering evidence and apprehending the suspects.
Arrests and Evidence Recovery
The search warrants yielded substantial results. Investigators recovered cash, stolen jewelry, and other evidence, which provided critical links to the burglary cases. Multiple vehicles were also seized, further solidifying the connection between the suspects and the crimes. Four individuals, all Colombian nationals, were arrested by Tigard police on felony charges. The suspects were identified as Herbert Grueso-Vergara, 30; Maria Castro-Gamboa, 26; Fabio Vergara-Cortes, 29; and Fatima Gomez-Aragon, 33. They were subsequently extradited back to Washington County to face the charges.
Additional Warrant in Portland
The investigation did not stop there. On February 5, an additional warrant was served in Portland by the TPD, the Portland Police Bureau, and the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) at an apartment complex on North Bristol Avenue. This warrant resulted in the recovery of more stolen jewelry and evidence, reinforcing the extent and sophistication of the burglary operation.
Ongoing Investigation and Future Charges
While the arrests marked a significant victory for law enforcement, the TPD and other agencies are continuing their investigation. They anticipate that more charges will be filed as the evidence is thoroughly examined and the case builds. The Tigard Police Department also expressed gratitude to the various Oregon and Washington officials who played a crucial role in the investigation, highlighting the importance of collaboration and community support in solving complex crimes. The community remains vigilant, and authorities are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
