CFL free agency set to begin Tuesday afternoon after busy open-window period

Introduction: Shawn Burke and the Ottawa Redblacks’ Strategic Approach to CFL Free Agency

Shawn Burke, the General Manager of the Ottawa Redblacks, is gearing up for the Canadian Football League (CFL) free agency period, which officially begins on Tuesday at 12:01 p.m. ET. However, the excitement of this event is somewhat tempered, as much of the groundwork has already been laid during the CFL’s open-window period. From February 2 to the previous Sunday, teams were permitted to negotiate with pending free agents, and Burke seized this opportunity with vigor. The Ottawa Redblacks have been actively securing deals with several key players, setting the stage for a strong roster heading into the 2025 season. Burke’s proactive approach reflects his commitment to building a competitive team, following a remarkable 2024 season that saw the Redblacks end a four-year playoff drought.

Burke’s Strategic Maneuvering in the CFL Free-Agent Window

The CFL introduced the free-agent window in 2020 to prevent tampering and to provide both players and teams with a clearer understanding of the marketplace. Burke has embraced this system, describing it as invaluable for fostering deeper communication between organizations and players. This window allows teams to engage in meaningful discussions, gather insights, and make informed decisions without the pressure of the official free agency deadline. For Burke, this process has been crucial in shaping the Redblacks’ roster for the upcoming season. He has reportedly reached agreements with several players, including defensive backs Tre Roberson, Amari Henderson, Nafees Lyon, Robert Priester, and Tunde Adeleke, as well as quarterback Matt Shiltz and receiver Eugene Lewis. Priester, who was set to become a free agent on Tuesday, signed a one-year deal with Ottawa just a day before, following his release from the Toronto Argonauts. Burke emphasized that much of the legwork has already been done, with Tuesday serving more as the official signing day.

The Impact of the Free-Agent Window on the CFL

The CFL’s free-agent window has proven to be a transformative tool for teams and players alike. By allowing early negotiations, it eliminates the chaos often associated with the traditional free agency frenzy. Burke highlighted the benefits of this system, noting that it enables organizations to thoroughly evaluate their needs and engage in detailed discussions with potential signees. This approach not only streamlines the decision-making process but also fosters a more transparent and collaborative environment. For the Redblacks, this has meant securing key talent while addressing specific positional needs. Burke expressed confidence in the progress made during this period, stating that the team is in a good position to welcome new players to the organization. However, he acknowledged the challenges of maintaining silence for a couple of days leading up to the official start of free agency, as teams await the outcomes of their negotiations.

Ottawa’s Focus on Strengthening the Secondary

One of the key areas Burke has targeted during this off-season is the secondary. The Redblacks experienced significant changes in their defensive backfield, with starting cornerback Brandin Dandridge being released and all-star halfback Damon Webb reportedly agreeing to terms with the Calgary Stampeders. In response, Burke has prioritized bringing in competition and depth to this position. The signings of Roberson, Henderson, Lyon, Priester, and Adeleke underscore the organization’s commitment to bolstering its defense. Burke explained that creating competition within the secondary is essential for fostering growth and excellence. By assembling a talented and diverse group of defensive backs, the Redblacks aim to build a formidable unit that can make an immediate impact in the 2025 season.

Eugene Lewis and the Redblacks’ Offensive Reinforcements

Another critical addition for the Redblacks is the signing of receiver Eugene Lewis, a three-time 1,000-yard receiver and the East Division’s Outstanding Player in 2022. Lewis’s arrival fills a significant void left by the retirement of American Jaelon Acklin and the departure of Dominique Rhymes, who joined the Calgary Stampeders. Lewis bring
